Under-15 Update

After the Kennedy Cup, all the way back in June, Athlone Town held open trials to assemble an Under-15s squad for the upcoming short season. After a number of trial games, over 20 players were selected for the season.

The squad worked hard in their pre-season with several training sessions a week and a number of training games against opponents like Mervue United and Salthill Devon.

The team were down to compete in the DDSL Premier 2 League and found themselves pitted against the likes of St Joseph’s Boys and Malahide United. They started their season in style with wins against Castleknock Celtic in the League and Firhouse Carmel in the SFAI Cup. They continued to make progress with wins against Tolka Rovers at home and notably a 4-2 win against St Joseph’s away with a hatrick from Tomas Devine.

They suffered their first defeat against Greystones on the 8th October in the Cup but it didn’t distract them from continuing their form in the League. A win against the title contenters Malahide, with goals from Adam Lennon and Luke Buckley, meant that they had a 5 point cushion at the top of the table going into November.

Further wins against Castleknock and St Jospeh’s kept the pressure on Malahide to keep up, and they did as Athlone suffered a 1-0 defeat away to their title rivals. Wins in the final away games against Knocklyon United and Tolka Rovers meant that Athlone topped the table by 2 points.

During the ten League games the defenders Matthew Cox, Luke Buckley, Aaron Devaney, Rob Owens, Cillian Lawlor, Jack Keenan, James Farrell, and keepers Patrick Reilly and Sean O’Toole only conceded 6 goals. The midfield players of Travis Courtney, Ronan Garvin, Luke Francis, Israel Kimazo and Ben O’Carroll showed great creativity and work rate. The attacking players of Adam Dowling, Nathan Williams, Jack Ryan, Thomas Devine, Conor Bracken, David Samuel, Jack Reynolds and Adam Lennon scored 21 goals between them.

As they finished top they are in a Finals day against the top finishers of the other League, date to be confirmed.
