Athlone Town 1 Wexford FC 0

Athlone Town secured their 3rd win of the season courtesy of a 23rd minute penalty from Walter Invernizzi.

Under the stewardship of Ricardo Cravo Athlone were on the back foot at the start with Wexfords Craig hayes having two chances on 8 and 11 minutes but both efforts were straight at labuts in the Athlone goal.

On 20 minutes Adam O’hanlon had another chance but yet again after the ball took two deflections it ended up in Labuts hands.

Athlone first chance came one minute later when Lyons found Viegas but his curling shot was well saved by Corey Chambers.

On 23 minutes Sfrijan was put through on goal but McCabe took him down giving Athlone a penalty. Invernizzi stepped up sending Chambers the wrong way.

The remainder of the 1st half continued in the same vein with chances for both sides with Wexford having the best chance but a free header was straight at Labutts.

Wexford continued in the 2nd half with chance after chance but couldn’t find an equaliser. Athlone had the ball in the net on 76 minutes when a free kick from Viegas found Coss but his’ header was saved but dropped by Chambers leaving Invernizzi to slide in and put the ball home but unfortunately for the home side the linesman had his flag raised.

This was the last Athlone chance of the half while Wexford had a number of chances unchallenged but had no one on the field who could find the net. So the final whistle sounded and Wexford will head home wondering how they were travelling home empty handed.

Next up for Athlone Town is an away trip across the border this coming Saturday 29th April where they take on Longford having lost out twice to them already this season. Kick off is 7.30pm
