Athlone Snatch Point in Thrilling Draw

Athlone Town headed into this game on a run of 3 consecutive defeats while Cabinteely were going for 4 wins in a row for the first time in their history. Athlone lined up without club captain Niall Scullion who was serving a suspension for his sending off last week against Shelbourne while Val Feeney was a notable absence from the matchday squad.

Cabinteely took the lead on 3 minutes when Evan Galvin tapped the ball home into an empty net after Conor Gleeson failed to hold the slippery ball following a save from Joe Doyle. On 12 minutes Cabinteely doubled their lead when Jack Watson tapped home past a helpless Conor Gleeson after a lofted ball had cleared the home defence.

Nearing the half hour mark it looked like the home side were being given a chance to pull one back when Conor Barry was taken down by Cabinteely goalkeeper Mick Kelly but referee Adriano Reale.

Athlone pulled one back 12 minutes into the second half when Walter Invernizzi blasted home on the half volley from a Conor Barry ball before 2 minutes later David Brookes took down Kieran Marty Walters down inside the area allowing the latter to slot home from the penalty spot making it 3-1.

On 63 minutes it could have got worse for Athlone but a linesman’s flag was raised to rule out another Cabinteely goal.

With one minute of normal time remaining Grigorovs had an excellent chance saved by Kelly in the Cabinteely goal.

Athlone were given a late lifeline when Rodrigues was taken down in the box and from the resulting penalty Conor Barry struck home making it 2-3. Then Athlone managed to pull a draw from the jaws of defeat when Rodrigues found Invernizzi in the box who headed down to Jason Lyons who bundled the ball home to make it 3-3 just on the final whistle.

This result means Cabinteely go level on points at the top of the division for 24 hours at least while Athlone close to within 3 points of top spot ending a run of 3 defeats although both Waterford and UCD both play Saturday night.

Next up for Athlone is a Tuesday night home EA Sports El Classico when they welcome Longford with kick off at 7.45pm before they make the journey to The Bowl next Friday 7th April where they take on UCD. Kick off is also at 7.45pm.
