Athlone hoping to get Season Back on Track

Athlone Town welcome Cabinteely FC to Athlone Town Stadium this Friday 31st March looking to get what looked like a promising season back on track after three heavy defeats in recent weeks. Kick off 7.45pm.

Since winning their first tow games of the season Athlone have crashed to three heavy defeats Longford 3-0, Cobh Ramblers 5-1 and Shelbourne last weekend in the stadium by a score of 4-1. While many will look back at these defeats saying that events in the game could be considered as bad luck (as with Niall Scullions sending off last weekend) in this game you create your own luck and over the last 2 games especially Athlone have not done that. Those three losses following an opening two wins have all come since Colin Fortune was demoted to head coach allowing Ricardo Monsanto to take over the reigns as manager and especially over the last 180 minutes of football Athlone have looked like a team with no leadership or structure.

While Athlone look like they are going downhill Cabinteely are on a run of 3 wins having defeated Wexford FC, Longford and last week hitting Cobh Ramblers for 4 goals which helped them climb to 3rd spot in the table just one point behind Waterford and UCD giving them a chance with a win to top the table as both teams ahead of them don’t play until Saturday night.

Athlone have played Cabinteely on 8 occasions winning 3, drawing 1 and losing 4 while scoring 14 goals and also conceding 14. During last season 17 of the 28 goals scored between the teams came in the 4 games with two defeats 5-1 and 2-1 away in Stradbrook and a 3-1 and 4-0 win the last time they played in the stadium.

Athlone will have to select without Niall Scullion who was sent off in last weekend’s defeat to Shelbourne while no injury news is available from the club.
