Athlone head to UCD Bowl in Must Win Game

Athlone Town travel to the UCD bowl this Saturday 8th April to take on fourth placed UCD who sit 3 points clear of the visitors making this game even so early in the season a must win game to avoid the top four to create a gap at the end of Series One in this seasons Airtricity League Division One. Kick off in The Bowl is scheduled for 7.45pm.

Last weekend Athlone brought their 3 game losing streak to an end when they came from behind to snatch a draw against Cabinteely FC in Athlone Town Stadium thanks to a last minute Jason Lyons goal. This draw was followed by a 4-3 defeat Tuesday to Longford again at home in the 1st round of the EA Sports Cup.

UCD’s form this season so far is a bit hit and miss since they won their opening two games with last weeks game away to Cobh Ramblers ending in a 1-0 defeat.

While both teams have scored 8 goals so far this season in the league Athlone defensively have a lot to prove having conceded 16 so far compared to UCD’s 4.

Recent fixtures between the sides have gone UCD’s way with Athlone on a run of 4 games against their opponents without a win although 3 of those 7 games have ended in score draws.

in 24 games played since 2005 UCD have won 13, Athlone 5 while 6 have ended in draws. One stat for people looking for entertainment is that in those games there has never been a scoreless draw. One stat that does not read good for Athlone is that in 13 games played in UCD’s various grounds since 1995 Athlone have only won 2 with these happening in April 1996 and March 2015 which was the last time Athlone defeated The Students courtesy of a Philly Gorman double in a 2-1 victory.

Those who attend the game will have their eyes on the bench with rumours circulating of as many as four members of the backroom staff being released or leaving during the week along with a player. Despite these stories circulating without any official confirmation from the club this cannot be confirmed prior to the game.

Athlone can welcome back Niall Scullion who sat out the 2nd game of his suspension for being sent off in debatable circumstances against Shelbourne. No further news on injuries is available from the club.
